Sociology Department


The Sociology Department at CASS was established in 1982. By October 2012, 138 doctoral students and 78 Masters’ students (included 1 foreigner) have been trained. The chairpersons have served are as following: the first chairperson was Wu Chengyi; second chairperson  He Jianzhang, deputy chairperson Shen Dade; the third chairperson Yang Yabin, deputy chairperson Shen Yuan; the fourth chairperson Li Peilin; the fifth chairperson Chen Guangjin; the sixth chairperson Qu Jingdong, deputy chairperson Lu huiping; the current chairperson Chen Guangjin, deputy chairperson Lu Huiping.

Our sociology graduate program was among the earliest approved first-grade disciplines in the graduate school of CASS. The doctoral specialization includes developmental sociology, enterprise organization and social development, social security, social structure and change, sociology of the family, social stratification and mobility, social anthropology, social psychology, rural sociology, social stratification, and sociology of organizations.  The Masters specialization includes social theory, sociological methods, social security, rural sociology, sociology of the family, developmental sociology, urban sociology, social psychology, and social stratification and mobility.

The esteemed sociological advisers are experts in various subfields. There are 14 doctoral advisers, including: Lu Xueyi, Jing Tiankui, Li Peilin, Su Guoxun, Wang Yanzhong, Chen Guangjin, Zhang Yi, Li Yinhe, Chen Yingying, Luo Hongguang, Yang Yiyin, Wang Chunguang, Li Chunling and Xia Chenling. There are also more than 30 Masters’ advisers. We engage in cutting-edge and significant projects with sufficient funding and library resources.

In terms of the graduate training, our high quality program offers a variety of informative and challenging courses and training. With strong professional support, the graduation rate has reached 100%. Since 2000, our graduate students have participated in dissertation competitions at both CASS and national levels, in which some have earned awards. In 2007, our program was awarded a highly competitive “key project grant” by the Educational Committee of Beijing municipal government.

In September 1994, we began a collaborative training program with Shue Yan University, and so far have graduated 18 Masters’ students. In September 1998, we began to recruit students from foreign countries as well as from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.
