About CSA

Chinese Sociological Association (CSA) is the nationwide professional organization for sociologists in teaching, research and practical fields. Its goal is that “under the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party and the guidance of Marxism, Leninism, Mao Zedong thought, Deng Xiaoping Theory and the “Three Represents' Important Thought”, CSA adheres to the people-centered scientific concept of development and adoption of the ‘Hundred Flowers, Hundred Schools’ approach, closely connect to the actual situations in China, actively carry out sociological research, promote sociology as a profession, and serve to build a prosperous, democratic and civilized modern socialist country.” CSA mission is “to organize and coordinate the division of work of the members, carry out various forms of academic activities, promote and assist social investigation at regional levels, disseminate sociological knowledge, advance the teaching and research level in Chinese sociology, publish sociological books, exchange academic information and materials, and organize and participate in domestic and international conferences or other forms academic exchange activities.”

CSA is based in the Institute of Sociology, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and its executive office is the Secretariat of the CSA.

CSA was established in March 1979, and its the past presidents included Professors Fei Xiaotong, Yuan Fang, Lu Xueyi, Zheng Hangsheng, and Li Peilin. Its current president is Professor Song Linfei; deputy presidents are: Li Peilin, Lu Hanlong, Liu Min, Cai He, Pan Yunkang, Li Youmei, Li Lulu, Bing Zheng, Shen Yuan, and Xie Lizhong; the Secretary in General is Xie Shouguang; Deputy Secretaries in General are: Wang Xiaoxi, Chen Guangjin, Liu Shiding, Hong Dayong, Chen Ru, Liu Jingming, Zhang Haidong, Tong Genxing. Lu Xueyi and Zheng Hangsheng serve as the honorary presidents.

CSA accepts group membership from research institutions or other academic organizations at provincial, autonomous regional and directly administrated municipal levels, as well as individual membership upon recommendation of local sociological associations, or teaching or research institutions. For membership, written application is required and to be approved by the CSA executive council. At present, there are 31 group members and over 1000 individual members. CSA is also home to more than 20 specialized committees in sociology.

Since its foundation, CSA has made numerous efforts in training, dissemination of sociological knowledge, promotion of sociology as an academic discipline and scholarly exchange, as well as making significant contributions to social reform and social development in China. In specific:

 

It has focused on the development of local/regional sociological associations, expansion of sociological research institutions, training, and establishment of sociological departments;

It has organized planning meetings on various levels or sizes and played an active role in the planning of sociology development, and coordinated numerous key research projects;

It has facilitated seminars and annual meetings nationally, and held diverse forms of scholarly exchange activities;

It has established a correspondence university with the mission of dissemination of sociological knowledge;

It has organized sociological seminars regularly;

It has organized various types of international seminars on sociology;

It publishes the Chinese Sociological Newsletter.

CSA is registered with the Ministry of Civil Affairs, People’s Republic of China.
